“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV
Often the Lord will use situations and experiences in our lives that take us through the wringer. Marring us, but for His glory, we are molded into the women He wants us to be. C.S. Lewis once stated, “God always allows us to feel the frailty of human love so we’ll appreciate the strength of His.” This is so true because I can’t even count how many times I have been let down, hurt, mistreated, and disrespected by people in my life. What I can do is recall a certain situation in which God used to break me, and in response, my capacity to love Him was immensely deepened.
When I was sixteen, I thought I had met the man I was destined to be with—the relationship I had with my first boyfriend was everything to me. What started out as a “fairytale” relationship quickly turned into a horrible nightmare. This guy that claimed to “love” me was quick to get angry, manipulate, control, demean, and abuse me physically and emotionally. I was so absorbed in what this guy preached to me as “love” that I totally disregarded the love the Father had for me. Eventually this distorted view of (human) love I was being shown broke me.
Sisters, 1 John 4:9-11 says that God loved us so much that He sent His Son to be the sacrifice for our sins. This is true love! The gospel is the greatest love story in history, and the love God has for us is unconditional—the costly love Christ showed us should move us towards the foot of the cross. Human love is weak and will always fail in comparison to the mighty strength of the love the Father has for us. His loving embrace provides endless comfort and hope. Hallelujah!
Dear heavenly Father, thank you for Your great love and kindness. Thank you for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for saving me, despite my rebellion against You. Help me to remain firm in Your Truth and to never forget Your steadfast love. Give me strength to overcome any selfish pursuits I have and help me love others like Christ. Deepen my capacity to know and love You more. In Your precious and holy Name, Amen.
