Biblical Theology Helps Us Love Our Neighbor
“And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39
We have all come in contact with that relentless theology-freak who thrives off of debates just for the sake of debating (or maybe this is you). The result usually ends up in anger of the affected party with no love executed whatsoever. The know-it-all typically isn’t concerned about helping someone understand God better but rather about being right in their own minds. Because of this, numerous people become turned off from the topic of Theology…but Theology isn’t merely a subject of debate. It should not only help us understand the superior nature of who God is, but it should also guide us in how we love and encourage our neighbors.
Theology matters because what we think about God reflects how we love and how we act toward others. It is the study of God’s word and His nature—how He came to love wicked, sinful creatures from the foundation of the world. It’s the redeeming story of how God sent His Son to be the propitiation of our sins. Sisters, theology is anchored in the Gospel—down to the very core. Theology doesn’t stop with you because the Gospel doesn’t stop with you…we are called to spread the Gospel, which is ultimately the most loving thing we could ever do.
Theology inevitably doesn’t save us—only the Gospel of Jesus Christ has the power to do that. But the more we know God and His nature and the more we grasp the story revealed in the Bible of God saving His people from eternal damnation, the more we can love our neighbor as ourselves.
Father, thank You for the Gospel. Help me to use theology—the study of You and Your word—to help further Your kingdom rather than turning people away from Your grace and forgiveness. Give me the right resources to know You better each and every day. Amen.
How can you know God more? How can you spread His truth to others and ultimately love your neighbor? Crack open your Bible, and pray God will illuminate the Scriptures.
