And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. - Deuteronomy 8:3
God allows the thirst and hunger for things in our lives to drive us to the ultimate reality that we are not sustained by anything or anyone but Him. We often run to our habitual comfort zones but after enough time we see them for what they are: broken cisterns.
It’s quite easy to pass judgment on another when we clearly see them being filled with something other than Christ. We get why life isn’t working for them and pity their situation. When it comes to ourselves, we aren’t quite as perceptive. The carnal nature is tricky and we really don’t like being uncomfortable so round and round we go.
There is real beauty when we reach that place of brokenness and frailty. God moves in that place. He meets us with a sustenance that words fail to adequately describe. Perhaps that’s why we read countless accounts of Jesus forgoing food, drink and sleep to seek and to be filled by the Father.
Father, awaken my thirst and hunger for You. Open my eyes to the things I’m being filled with other than You and gently redirect me. Amen.
What is your “go to” to be filled/comforted/sustained?
