Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.  1 Corinthians 12:4-6 ESV

Reflect

“Mom, hurry!” Whispered my son as he motioned me to the backyard.  As I sat down next to him and listened, the air erupted with the songs of countless birds.  It was extraordinary!

We marveled at the song God had given each bird to sing and our conversation gravitated to the “song” that God gives each one of us to sing.  How much less amazing would it have been if all of the birdsongs were the same?  The beauty was in the variation of melodies; the soft songs mixed with the loud, the simple songs mixed with complex ones.

Just as no two birds sing the same song, you and I will differ in our melodies. Some have exciting and more public callings and some have mundane and, at times, lonely callings. Our Maker knit us together specifically for the call He has upon each of our lives.  The truth is, one calling is not above another.  All are of equal importance in God’s eyes.

While we sat listening in wonder, I found myself quietly praying for each of us to boldly live the life God has for us.  The snare of comparison and the lie of inadequacy often rob us of the quiet contentment that is precious in God’s sight.

Pray

Merciful Father, help me to be content with the life that You have called me to.  I want to embrace my calling fully, looking to please You alone.

Your Turn

What is the song God has called you to sing?

Are you prone to compare your abilities and callings to those of others?

Do you realize that our giftings are interdependent upon each other for the edification of the body of Christ?
