“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.’ — Hebrews 12:1-2
I am not an athlete. I dabbled in sports when I was young and even managed to complete Army Basic Training, but have never considered myself athletic. On a good day I might manage to get my daily walking in. Even then, my endurance is short-lived. Despite my physical limitations and lack of physical endurance, there is one race that I can run and will finish. This Christian life is not an easy one, it was never meant to be walked without labor and difficulty. We don’t live the easy life once we are adopted as His daughters. Truly surrendering our wills to Christ exerts us. This race is laborious, but we will cross that finish line.
To run this race with endurance is to fix our eyes on Jesus. He endured the cross, so we could finish this race. So as we run this race, let us strip off the heaviness of sin that weighs us down. Why hang on to something that so easily drags us down when Jesus offered perfect redemption so that we may run without the heavy guilt and shame? The Word of God clearly shows us the Christian life is a hard marathon to run. We are in a race, the course is laid out, we have witnesses surrounding us, and we will finish as long as our eyes are on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
Jesus, thank you for setting the course before us and giving us the grace to run it with endurance.
Knowing that Jesus sets your course and is the author of your faith, are you ready to get your running shoes on and make it to the finish line?
