Keep Your Tongue From Evil

For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit…” 1 Peter 3:10

Gossip: we all have been guilty of it at some point in our lives…I know I have more times than I would like; yet, it is a sin that is usually overlooked. If you have ever been the victim of gossiping, you may know how hurtful it can be. So what is it about gossip that feels so good?
While gossiping’s content usually focuses on something other than ourselves, it tends to be all about us. We bring someone else down in order to reassure our own insecurities. It’s almost satisfying to hear the brokenness of the people we envy, making ourselves feel more righteous than ever. But the truth is we are no better than those we slander. We can seriously hurt people with our words, and as Christians, we must strive for our tongues to align with God’s word, not the words of this world.

The next time we feel the urge to gossip, we need to remind ourselves of how it will never be able to give us the righteousness we desire…only Christ can. Instead of gossiping about others, let’s tell them about Christ and take our wanted gossip to Him through prayer. It’s time we expose the lies of gossip and let the truth of Christ shine throughout. We need to throw away the lies of the devil and fall at the mercy and grace of our Savior.

Father, forgive me for slandering against my brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray you give me the strength to withstand gossiping in the future. Instead, let me be a light to others.
