Leaving the Past in the Past
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!" 2 Corinthians 5:17
The New Year is a great time to reflect on the past. Sometimes reflecting on the past, however, isn’t a positive experience. I think sometimes, even after we receive Christ, we can beat ourselves up and let Satan tell us we aren’t good enough for the grace of God. When we cannot forgive ourselves, it is another way of saying what Christ did on the cross isn’t enough. We try to play God when we condemn ourselves for things God has already forgiven us for. 1 John 1:9 says when we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We need to take the Word of God as truth, and not only that, but we need to trust it as well.
As we go into 2018, let’s have a mindset of confession because we will never be perfect. But let's also live in the mindset of forgiven, beloved children of God. In Christ we are new creations...the old has passed away and the new has come. If you are in Christ, you are made new! What a blessing the grace and mercy of God is.
God, I thank You so much for the opportunity of the New Year to reflect. We thank You that in You we are a new creation, we are forgiven, and Your grace and mercy abound. Thank You for 2018 and the opportunities that are in front of us. May our eyes be fixed on You. Amen.
Do you have trouble forgiving yourself? Spend time in 1 John today, and praise God we have the opportunity to be His children.
