Love the Body God Created
“For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, and I know this very well. My bones were not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began.” Psalm 139:13-16
As women, we can appear to take enjoyment out of verbally tearing our bodies apart. “I’m so out of shape.” “I hate the texture of my hair.” “My feet are way too big.” “Why is my skin so sickly pale?” “I wish I had a thigh gap—instead I have these huge legs.” “If only I were more curvy.” If asked to, we could probably list one hundred problems we have with our physical appearance.
Friend, this body you love to hate was created and formed by God—and He called it wonderful and good. We are remarkably made because we are made by the Creator of the universe; the One who formed the beautiful pink and red sunsets also knit you together in your mother’s womb. He made you the way you are, and He called it beautiful.
Your body is not simply an ugly cage for your soul to reside in. It’s a part of who you are and your identity, and a good part of it. The Bible doesn’t say your soul is the true and better you while your body is this thing you drag around as a hinderance. Both body and soul are essential to you, and both were created by God and called good (Genesis 1:26-31).
God commands us to love Him not only with our souls but also with our minds and our strength (Deuteronomy 6:5). This body will also be raised as incorruptible and spiritual in glory and power on resurrection day (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).
How then should be think of our bodies? Not as hideous, but as things created by a wonderful God to be stewarded to His glory—as something to use in tandem with our souls to love and serve God.
Dear God, I often feel ashamed of my body. I struggle to see it as wonderfully created by You. Help me to believe that. Help me to not hate my body, but to love it to Your glory by caring for it and stewarding it well. I am aware that when it comes to caring for my body, there is the temptation to idolize it, so please teach me as well how to care for my body in such a way that glorifies You.
Have you been caring for your body well? Or do you push it to the limits, completely ignoring your need for rest and nourishment? Take some time to evaluate if you are stewarding your body well and see if there are any changes you should be making.
