Only He Is Good
"And Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.'" Luke 18:19
When we call something or someone good, what are really saying about that particular thing or person? We say the weather is good when it suits our benefit. We call someone good when they are expressing a particular trait that we find desirable or evenly morally right. We even greet one another with a “good morning” or “good evening” in hopes that their time of day is going well and will continue to do so. We use the word “good” more often than we think about. However, as we all know, the level of goodness temporal things possess often wanes depending on what happens or how we see it. When something bad happens or someone does something bad to us, the good is often shadowed by the circumstances we find ourselves in and allowing the word “good” to be far from our lips when describing our present plight.
God is good in every sense of the word. It isn’t just something He portrays. It is who He is. It has been said that His goodness is the bedrock of all Scripture. He is good in His loving kindness and mercy that He shows His enemies by offering a way of salvation through His Son, Christ Jesus (John 3:16-17). He is good to the justified and the unjustified, allowing all who live to breath His breath of life and partake in the graces given in the world (Psalm 145:8-9, Matthew 5:45). Knowing God is unchanging and immutable (James 1:17), we can trust that His goodness and mercy will follow those who have put their trust in Him all of their days (Psalm 23:6).
We can say God is good no matter what our circumstances or the people around us look like because He has revealed Himself to us in His Word, by the Spirit, through the gift of His Word. So, call Him good when things are crumbling around you or circumstances are making it hard to keep your eyes on Him. Downcast souls are lifted when their eyes are fixed back on the Author and Finisher of our faith.
Lord, You are good and Your mercy endures forever. Anything and everything in this world that we call good in its true sense reflects Who You are. Remind us of Your goodness each day, so that we may be grateful for You and glorify Your name. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
The world calls what is evil good and what is good evil. God is good. Meditate on His goodness, and remind yourself daily of His faithfulness, despite what season you are in.
