Perfect Love Casts out Fear
"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us." 1 John 4:18-19
Fear is a very real emotion we have to deal with in this life. We fear losing loved ones. We fear of losing our jobs. We fear losing our homes and resources. Most times, we fear losing something we have gained and is precious to us.
There is another fear that lurks in the minds of the Christian: the fear of God. But sometimes this fear is the wrong type of fear. The Scriptures tell us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). To have a reverence and deep admiration for our holy and sovereign God is a good and precious thing! After all, He should be worshipped with this type of fear and holy trembling. But imagine a child being so fearful of their father, who loves them with an everlasting and complete love, that they often run from him than to him. This is the type of fear some harbor, and it is not biblical.
When Christ won us by His death and resurrection, making us daughters of our God and Father, this was something He didn't think of on a whim or as He hung on the cross. It was already predestined (Ephesians 1; 1 John 1:12-13). You were already completely loved and cherished by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit before you came to salvation. This truth should assure our hearts and calm our fears to come to God with grace, mercy, and love marking our steps to Him (Hebrews 4:16). No sins have or will commit can severe the tie between us and God (Romans 8:38-39). He loved you before the foundation of the world, and He will never stop loving you.
Don't let the wrong type of fear keep you from your Father. Run to Him in prayer. He is always there to receive you. You are His daughter.
Father, sometimes our pasts, wrong teachings, or wrong learning can affect our view of You and fear from our flesh and the enemy can drive us to run from You than to You. Please let Your Spirit ease our fears, and remind us that we belong to You. Remind us of Your perfect love, and let it cast out fear. In Your name, Amen.
Do you have a wrong view of God? Is the type of fear you have drive you to God or away from Him? Ask yourself what lies you are believing and pray for clarity. He loves you!
