“For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8 ESV
We see all throughout Scripture the chosen people of God–His children–are to be a godly, upright, righteous people (2 Corinthians 7:1). Since Christians are called to be holy, we must understand the characteristics of godliness that aid us in our conformance to Christ and not this world. To be godly means we must fear the Lord (Ecclesiastes 12:13). This is not a timid, sinful, agonizing fear, but instead, it is a fear that is divine! When a woman fears the Lord, she reveres Him, adores Him, and stands in awe of His nature. Our God is holy, and the beauty of His majesty should cause us to tremble with joy, praise, and admiration. When we fear the Lord, it drives us to kill our sin and pursue His righteousness. When we fear God, we understand how great He is and how displeasing it would be to sin against Him.
My sisters, there is great gain in godliness, and the Bible openly teaches this (1 Timothy 6:6). As Thomas Watson, a Puritan preacher, once said, “See the saints safety: they are Gods jewels, and He will take great care to preserve them…let your lives be an imitation of the life of Christ!” How wonderful and comforting are these promises provided to us in the Scriptures! Those who fear the Lord will be fully satisfied (Proverbs 19:23); those who fear God and keep His commandments are promised the goodness of God and inheritance of His kingdom (Psalm 31:19, Matthew 6:33).
As women who have the fear of the Lord in us, we can examine ourselves, understand better who God is, and consider how serious it is to serve God wholeheartedly–staying in the Word and pursuing His statutes should become a reflex. Because of Christ we can glorify God willingly, experience His eternal comfort, and bear His image to the world.
Dear heavenly Father, thank You for Your goodness and mercy! Help me to fear You, God, at all times and at all costs. Reveal to me Your truths in the Scriptures that I might not sin against You. Thank You for loving me and shepherding me. Instill in me a love for godliness and a willingness to serve You. Amen.
