Pursuing Holiness for His Glory
But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:28 ESV
We are now a month past the New Year holiday, and our resolutions are either going strong or starting to fizz out. Many times, we tend in our Christian circles, vow to be more holy, and work towards a more righteous lifestyle. This usually means we are going to wake up at dawn and do our quiet time, and we are going to be the holiest, righteous person this side of Sunday.
What is inevitable, especially when we try to do things by our own accord, we fail.
What is the key to pursuing holiness? What is the key to a righteous lifestyle? The answer is choices. Our choices of obedience lead to blessing, our choices of rebellion lead to consequence. Overall, when we take each choice we make daily and we use the Bible as our compass, our choices then become a lifestyle.
This can only be done by the power of the Holy Spirit. There is nothing we can do on our own to enable us to walk righteously and perfectly in this life. When we diligently study God’s word as our absolute authority for living, and we are obedient to its commands, our choices then turn to obedience, and we see reward.
Our reward should not be our motivation for a holy lifestyle. If our intent in obedience is self, we have it backwards. Yes, blessing does come from obedience in each choice that we do make, but ultimately, we make choices that will Glorify God, because that is our purpose. It is simple sisters, we stay in scripture. We let the Bible be our moral authority. We make our choices based on God’s authoritative word, and we seek obedience enabled by the Holy Spirit. This leads to holy actions, which leads to a holy lifestyle.
Father I know that only by Your power can I be obedient in my choices. Help me to flee from temptation when needed, and give me the wisdom I need in each situation. My life is yours, and to You be the glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
How do you seek wisdom in making decisions?
Do you struggle with being obedient or with certain sins?
Spend time this week seeking out scriptures that may address your struggles and pray for the Holy Spirit to enable you in obedience.
