Remembering Why Jesus Came to Earth

Reflect

Christmas has come this year in full force, but not without hustle and bustle. Holiday programs, Christmas parties and many other activities seem to overshadow the actual season. In this house we have been so busy, I must be honest, we have had trouble slowing down and taking the time to reflect on the purposes that Jesus had in coming. I have been so worried about lists, and food, and getting things done, that I myself have turned Jesus’ birth into a list of tasks instead of taking the time to slow down and just behold my Savior.

Tomorrow we reflect on a holiday that can be overshadowed by presents, celebrations, holiday parties, food, and fellowship. While none of those are bad in themselves, let us not forget the magnitude of what Jesus did when He came to this earth, and why He did it.

Jesus came to this earth in obedience to the Father, so He may fulfill the plan God had in redeeming you and me. Jesus was a servant. He came to serve and to model this so that we may know how to serve. He came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). He came to testify to the truth (John 18:37) and ultimately, to glorify God (John 17:4).

Looking at this purpose, what are our motivations? Do we do things to glorify God or to earn His favor? There is a difference. We can’t earn God’s favor; Jesus did that for us. We can, however, in obedience, in servanthood, and in truth glorify God in everything we do. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas, sisters. Take some time tomorrow to behold your God and praise Him.

Pray

Jesus, I thank You for coming to this world to seek and to save me. You came to save sinners and to serve. Your humility and Your love are something I seek to know, and I seek to mirror. Help me to love those deemed unlovable. Help me to be obedient, and help me to constantly be a servant. Thank You, Jesus, for loving me. In Your holy name I pray, Amen.

Your Turn

List the reasons Jesus came to earth this week. Spend some time in John 12:1-36. Does this change your perspective on why Jesus came?
