Sliding Backward, Moving Forward
But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. Revelation 2:4-5 ESV
It is said that the Christian walk is like walking up a downward escalator; you're either walking forward or sliding backward, but you're never still. This is what happened the church in Ephesus, the people had began to distance themselves from God, otherwise known as backsliding.
In these series of verses, God in his grace gives us a 3 step solution for when we find that we are beginning to backslide. The first thing God's word reveals to us is that we look backward to see where we may have begun to fall. Was it that first couple of weekends where we decided it would be okay to sleep in? Was it a neglect of our prayer time? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you where the backsliding may have began.
Then next thing we do, is we repent. Prayer is crucial, regardless of how you may be feeling, and to express humility and repentance is something we need to do to get our eyes back heavenward. Finally, we get back to work. If we have been neglecting church, quiet time, service, prayer time, we get back to it. There is no condemnation in our complacency, but it can lead us to a place of devastation and self induced consequence if we continue to let ourselves distance ourselves from God, forgetting the love we had at first.
God I thank you that no matter how far I tend to go, you never leave or forsake me. Forgive me when I distance myself from you, and help me to see where I need to repent. Thank you for giving me the grace to continually begin again. In your precious name I pray, Amen.
Do you find yourself in a place where you feel you have gotten away from God?
If so, remember, repent, and get back to work. Ask the Holy Spirit for the grace to guide you back into the path you were on.
