Solid Comfort from a Solid Source
“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.” Psalm 118:8-9
When you are feeling uneasy or insecure about a situation, how often do you run to man before running to God? If I’m being honest, it is almost always my initial, mindless reaction to fear. I run to my husband, I run to friends, I run to Google to search my fears away, only to be left worried further by what WebMD has to say about the migraine I have. There is nothing wrong with using resources God has given us. Absolutely seek counsel and comfort from others! But don’t do it at the neglect of seeking the God who knows you best and who holds the whole world in His hands.
Sisters, man can only do so much to calm your anxious, weary heart. Ultimately, solid comfort must come from a solid source. Unlike humans, God is infallible. Unlike humans, God can pour peace into your heart. Unlike humans, God is sovereign over the very situation you’re fretting over. Why not run to Him first?
Our first reaction to turbulence in our lives shouldn’t be to cling to man; it should be to cling to the Rock of Ages. When we hear bad news, feel uneasy, or worry about tomorrow, we should be running to God in prayer, we should be opening His Word, and we should be seeking the One who holds tomorrow.
Father, thank You for being the only reliable anchor in the storm. Thank You for being a trustworthy source of comfort. I confess I do not always run to You when I am distressed. Instead, I seek comfort from man. Please help me to always seek You first and foremost, that I may find rest for my soul, before seeking counsel from a fallen world. Amen.
