The Call of a Sojourner

“For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding.” 2 Chronicles 29:15

The fathers of our faith—Noah, Abraham, Moses, David—these men were constant movers and travelers. They were never settled, they never felt fully at ease, and they were never truly comfortable. They were consistently ripped from their homes, called into unknown territories, called into the desolate wilderness, and moved by God time and time again. These men never once settled for the easy or simple path. And with every terrifying journey, with every unknown direction from God, His glory increased all the more through the faith and the trust of these traveling men.

Friends, if your walk with God feels hard—if it feels trying, uncomfortable, or unsettled—you are on the right track. As joyous as our life with Christ is guaranteed to be, it is certainly never guaranteed to be easy, and the fathers of our faith are long-standing examples of this.

Yes, it is okay to feel unsettled. It is okay to feel as if you haven’t found your permanent place. We are sojourners, travelers, immigrants traveling through a land that is not ours (Philippians 4:20). And the journeys that the Lord so often calls us on throughout this land are anything but breezy walks through a meadow. They are uphill, rocky, dusty, and often feel endless. But we are guaranteed that every step, every turn, and every bump or bruise along the way is serving a purpose so much grander than us or our journey. So pack up, get ready, follow His lead, and go where He calls—wherever and whenever.

Lord, I pray for the heart of a sojourner, one that is ready and willing to go wherever You call. And I pray that You steady and strengthen me on this journey You have prepared with a resolve and a faith that can come from You and You alone.

Take today to reflect on where the Lord has currently called you—the place, the people, the culture, the purpose. As a sojourner, how can you act in faith and boldness within this place to do what the Lord has asked of you here?
