The Real Reason We Should Confront False Teaching
“Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith…” Titus 1:13b
From legalism to the prosperity gospel, many Christians are well aware of the damage false teaching produces in the soul. Paul, in his letter to Titus, reminds him that “they must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.”
The letter reveals these false teachers to be spreading unsound doctrine as well as Jewish myths and additions to God’s word (Titus 1:10, 14). While the immediate context is speaking to the duty of the elders in a church, I believe we can apply it to our lives as well.
In the age of social media, modern-day false teachers are openly rebuked in our Facebook feeds, and rightly so (if done with a correct motive). We must do our best to be discerning Christ followers, bringing truth to bear in a kind and loving way, for the sake of our own souls and also the souls around us. But I believe many of us have forgotten another reason we should correct false teachers…“that they may be sound in the faith” (Titus 1:13).
Many times, our hearts are filled with hatred for those who mar the truth, but Paul reminds us we should have hearts longing for God to grant them repentance so they would be reconciled to Him. Let us continue to speak truth in love and correct false teaching, but let us also spend time on our knees, praying they’d be saved. Truly, the only thing that makes you and me different from them is Christ.
Father, I pray you’d give us hearts for the lost. I pray you’d open the eyes of the blind who are leading the blind and save them, that they might lead others to the truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Pray for a heart that longs for false teachers to be saved.
