The Sovereign Counsel of His Will
“In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.” Ephesians 1:11
I used to believe that my salvation was completely dependent on my response to God inviting me. I thought the ball was in my court, so to say, and living this life of Christ was because I personally chose to live this life for Christ. God called me, and I responded with a resounding “yes”! Over the last couple of years as I have studied doctrine and dug deep in His word, the Lord opened my eyes to the truth of His word. One of the most hated and despised doctrines is that of the sovereignty of God. He is in complete control, and because there is evil and uncertainty in this world, that is a hard pill to swallow for some. Though there are many aspects of this doctrine I could write about, this is specifically regarding salvation. Just how much of my salvation was by my own hand or own doing? Absolutely none.
“So that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:7
My salvation was not my own doing. Your salvation was not your own doing. Sisters, if you are born again, it is solely because you were elected, called, regenerated, converted, justified, and adopted—because God willed it. God drew you. If our salvation has anything to do with us then we have something to boast about, don’t we? We can’t even take credit for our faith because it is a gift from Him! If you are saved, it’s because God’s will is for you to be saved. He isn’t just sovereign over all the universe and then decides to sit back and watch how we respond to an invite, leaving it completely our responsibility. Let’s not treat this like a wedding invitation that we can decline. "...these whom He [God] called, He also justified" (Romans 8:30). Those He effectually calls, He saves. In His sovereignty, we are saved by the counsel of His will and the grace of God!
“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is Yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all. In Your hand are power and might, and in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all” (2 Chronicles 20:11-12). Amen!
As John Piper says, “Let us stand in awe of the sovereign authority and freedom and wisdom and power of God.” It was never a personal choice to be saved because there is nothing in me that could have ever willingly come to Christ. The ball was never in my court, and I am thankful the Lord opened my eyes to that. Study the Word. If you believe the way I once did, I pray the Lord opens your eyes to see that that He works all things, including your salvation, to the counsel of His sovereign will.
