The Unexpected One
And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!” 1 Samuel 17:37 ESV
Jesse asked David to take food to his brothers. Arriving at the army camp he hears Goliath mocking God and the Israelites. No one is willing to represent The Living God and risk fighting a giant. Goliath was, after all, nearly 10 feet tall and wore 126 pounds of armor. Unexpectedly however, a boy delivering lunch was willing to fight. God guides David's hand, Goliath falls, God gets the glory and David reaps the blessing.
As we grow in the knowledge of our Lord through His word, there are emerging patterns. We see thousands of years of repeated redemption and rescue. We also see God using people one might not normally expect end up doing incredible things for His kingdom. The broken, the doubting, the sick, the healthy, the educated, the illiterate, the rich, the poor, the old, the young, the sinner and the saint all appear in our spiritual lineage. God doesn’t ask us to do great things, He asks us to let Him do great things through us. And when we say yes to His ideas, He is glorified and we are blessed beyond measure. Let’s have the courage to be the unexpected ones He wants to use!
Father, thank You for giving us the opportunity to be a part of Your story! Help me remember that You empower anything and everything You ask of us. Let me run joyfully into Your plans in obedience and trust so others know of Your goodness and glory. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
