Why We Can't Keep Our New Year's Resolutions
“Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.” Psalm 146:3
It was New Year’s Eve, and my husband and I were reflecting on 2017 as we drove down the highway. As we pondered on all of the heartbreak, fears, excitement, and memories this past year brought, we couldn’t help but be thankful. And with 2018 just around the corner, we discussed our new goals for the upcoming year—more success in business, dedicated daily praying, become more organized, and so much more. With these new goals in mind, I couldn’t help but notice how majority of people never reach their goals of the New Year. Why is that? Why is it so hard for us to keep our New Year’s resolutions?
I tend to put my faith in trust in these new and exciting goals. I think to myself, “If I reach this goal, I will be happier with my life.” And when that goal is never met, I am left feeling more disappointed and defeated than ever…and I know there are other people out there who feel the same way. Sisters, the reason we tend to lose determination and ultimately never reach these goals is because we put our faith and trust in the New Year when we should be putting our faith and trust in God. We are trusting in our own works rather than trusting in what Christ did on the cross. No matter how hard we train, no matter how many planners we buy, and no matter how hard we try to fight temptation, we cannot do it on our own—we have to cling to Christ. He is the only One who will help us reach our goals.
2018 is here, and it will be gone before we know it. Although we are in a new year, one thing is still true: we have a Savior who is walking with us hand-in-hand through each up and down these next 365 days. Whether we fail or we succeed, all the glory goes to Him. Christ is our eternal hope and our faithful Savior.
Father, thank You for this New Year filled with new goals, chances, and excitement. Help me to set realistic goals and to cling to You as I reach for them. I know You are the only One who can help me better myself. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Do you find yourself trusting in the New Year instead of Christ? Do you fail to meet your New Year’s resolutions every year? Pray and ask God to give you determination, focus, and hope. Pray that you would cling to Him for strength instead of yourself.
