Your Legalism Is Offensive to God
“Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it.” Deuteronomy 12:32
Many of us have read the viral blog about debt-less, tattoo-free virgins this week. Some of us laughed at it’s ridiculous content, while others grieved at the seriousness of the claims. I personally laughed out loud but was simultaneously saddened. Even more heartbreaking than the blog itself were those who stood up for it in agreement. Its content is Christ-less, and yet, many Christians resounded a hearty “Amen!”
For those of us who recognize the utter destruction of an article like that, the temptation is to believe we ourselves don’t hold too tightly to our opinions. Certainly, we’re free from legalism like that! We must look within our hearts and decipher if that’s actually true. Do we raise up any of our opinions as God’s truth?
Our thoughts on homeschooling, vaccinating, what we wear, secular music, etc...are we claiming them as truth even as we lack the Bible to back us up? Are we demanding other Christians to meet our standards, all the while labeling them as rules of God? Have you ever questioned someone’s salvation simply because they made a different choice than you? What pride!
Our legalism is offensive to a holy God. By adding man-made rules to God’s commands, we place ourselves as the authority over others, and we distort the beauty of Christ to a watching world. Are we holier than God? We, who aren’t good, “no not even one" (Romans 3:10)? Certainly not. How dare you and I elevate ourselves by adding to His commands.
“Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.” Proverbs 30:5-6
Oh God, forgive us of our pride. We strive to add to Your commands and place heavy weights upon the shoulders of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Please convict us of any opinions we need to view as just that: opinions. In Jesus name, Amen.
If the Holy Spirit has convicted you of any commands you’ve added to God’s Word, repent and take hold of grace.
